BOSTON – In its annual "Dig Pink" match, the Northeastern volleyball team (8-12, 6-6 CAA) got back in the win column with a thrilling five-set victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves (14-8, 7-5 CAA) on Saturday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
Brynn Smith paced NU with 18 kills and 18 digs, recording her third double-double of the season.
Millie Loehr also had a sensational performance for the Huskies with 13 kills on .375 hitting with four blocks.
Northeastern's offense was guided by
Carly Cooper with 25 assists and 12 digs, her fifth double-double of the season.
Arina Sosinovica also added 21 assists.
In the back row,
Nadia Koanui had a stellar day with a career-high 32 digs. Koanui has tallied double-digits in 18 matches for Northeastern this season, and continues to be a force in the conference ranking second with 347 total digs (4.69 per set).
- Set One: Both teams traded points, with neither leading by more than two. Back-to-back kills from Smith trimmed the Stony Brook deficit to 10-9, but the visitors responded back. A few points later, after the Seawolves led 16-12, Northeastern went on a 5-0 run highlighted by three kills from Jane Nelson to storm ahead at 17-16. Smith was the story for NU in the frame, tallying six of her kills on .357 hitting to propel the Huskies to a 25-22 set win.
- Set Two: Stony Brook got off to a 10-5 advantage and remained in front. The Huskies tallied three straight points to make the score 16-12, but Stony Brook responded back. A kill by Loehr followed by an error by the visitors trimmed the Seawolves' lead to 20-15, but Stony Brook went on winning the next five points to take the set at 25-15.
- Set Three: The Huskies came out firing to start the frame, taking a 7-2 lead. A few points later, NU went on a 4-0 run highlighted by a sneaky kill from Cooper to extend the advantage to 15-6. The Huskies continued to push the pace, taking a 22-14 lead down the stretch. NU won the final three points of the set to win at 25-15. The Huskies hit .343 overall in the frame.
- Set Four: Northeastern got off to a 10-8 lead, but the Seawolves knotted the score up with the next two points. Smith gave NU a 18-16 advantage after a kill, but Stony Brook tallied the next six points (22-18). The visitors went on to take the set at 25-20.
- Set Five: Loehr got NU going in the frame with a kill followed by a solo block to take a 7-5 lead. Stony Brook though, fought back to trim the deficit a few points later at 9-8. Northeastern responded back in a big way down the stretch, winning six of the next seven points highlighted by back-to-back kills by Smith to seal the match win (15-9).
- Gabby Reeves chipped in with 11 digs.
- Nelson had nine kills, nine digs, and three blocks.
- Sahitya Krishnamurthy added 12 digs.
- As a team, NU outblocked Stony Brook nine to five.
The Huskies will hit the road to face Towson on Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3.
