DURHAM, N.H. — Two quick responses off penalty corners were the difference, as the Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (6-6, 1-1 CAA) earned its third straight victory after defeating the New Hampshire Wildcats (5-7, 2-0 AE) by a score of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
- Graduate student Lauren Rowe opened the scoring after freshman Juana Gonzalez-Peyru pounced on a Wildcat turnover. The Miami native would find Rowe in the center of the circle, tapping in a rebound from her initial shot to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage 5:30 into the second quarter.
- In the third, New Hampshire responded with an equalizer off a penalty corner to tie the contest. However, Northeastern answered 78 seconds later off their own corner, as Rowe rifled a shot into the heart of the circle, finding the stick of junior Emmy Stubbs to regain the lead going into the final quarter of play.
- The Huskies showed their defensive toughness early in the fourth quarter, successfully stopping four straight penalty corners to keep themselves in front.
- The hosts converted their second of the game with 11:29 remaining in the game when a Wildcat midfielder used a solo run to tie the game at 2-2.
- Like in the second quarter, the Huskies answered immediately on another penalty corner. After a shot from senior Lara Taylor was blocked in the circle, the midfielder maintained possession, finding graduate student Caroline Sweeney on the byline. Sweeney then squared a pass to Stubbs, scoring the game-winning goal and giving Northeastern a 3-2 victory.
- Rowe's single assist puts her at 38 career assists, officially surpassing Shelley Morris and ranking her fifth all-time in Northeastern field hockey program history.
- Stubbs scored her third game-winner of the season, ranking her first on the team and in the conference.
- Senior goalkeeper Kristi Merashoff recorded seven saves on the afternoon.
Northeastern returns to Dedham for another CAA contest, hosting the Towson Tigers (5-6, 1-2 CAA) on Friday, Oct. 11, at 3:00 p.m. The game will be available on NESN and FloLive.
