DEDHAM, Mass — In one of the biggest games so far this season, the Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (7-6, 2-1 CAA) extended its winning streak to four games after earning a 3-1 victory over the Towson Tigers (5-7, 1-3 CAA) on Friday afternoon's Mental Health Awareness game.
- The Huskies opened the scoring 11:37 in the first after applying constant pressure in the Tiger circle, allowing graduate student Mak Graves to create space from the top of the circle and rifle a shot into the bottom left corner of the cage, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
- Northeastern responded less than a minute late when graduate student Lauren Rowe's initial shot was saved from a penalty corner. The team swarmed the net in hopes to put the ball in the back of the cage, and after battling, the ball found its way to the stick of senior Lara Taylor, who slotted the Huskies second of the afternoon.
- At 6:29 in the second quarter, Graves used a long run through the heart of the Towson defense before squaring a lobbed ball to junior Emmy Stubbs, who tapped the ball out of the air to give Northeastern a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
- Both sides could not find the back of the cage in the third. However, Towson found its first of the game after a saved shot by senior Kristi Merashoff landed in front of an opposing player, putting one into the net to cut the deficit to 3-1. However, Northeastern would go on to control possession and take a 3-1 victory.
- Graves led the Huskies on the afternoon with three points, followed by Stubbs and Taylor with two each.
- Friday's win was the team's fourth straight, the longest streak this season and matching last year's best.
- Northeastern successfully defended six of seven penalty corners, including a defensive save from senior Maria Armaganian.
Next, Northeastern faces off against in-city rival Boston University (5-6, 2-2 Patriot) on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. The contest will be available to stream on ESPN+.
