BOSTON – Abby Jegede and
Yirsy Quéliz each tallied double-digit points, but it wasn't enough as the Northeastern women's basketball team (0-3) fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats (3-1) on Thursday evening at the Cabot Center.
Jegede continued her strong play as a Husky, recording her third straight game in double figures with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Quéliz, playing in her first game of the season, added 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting.
Clara Gomez had 14 points for the Wildcats, who shot 22-of-55 overall and 2-of-14 from three.
UNH got off to an early 2-0 lead, but a layup by
Taylor Holohan knotted the contest right up. Both teams traded points through the first few minutes, with neither leading by more than two. After a free throw by Queliz trimmed the Wildcats' lead to 8-5, the visitors ended the quarter outscoring NU 5-3 to take a 13-8 advantage into the second. UNH shot 46.2% overall in the frame.
The Wildcats took control in the second, outscoring the Huskies 16-1 to take a 29-9 lead into halftime.
A steal by
Bailey Williams followed by a basket from Holohan cut into the deficit to start the third, but the Wildcats responded right back. Quéliz tallied four straight points with 1:22 to go, but UNH maintained its double-digit lead going into the final frame.
Jegede and Queliz shined in the fourth with five points apiece, but the Wildcats held on for the win.
The Huskies will return to the court at Harvard on Tuesday, November 19. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
