CHARLESTON, S.C. – Two Huskies tallied double-digit kills, but the Northeastern volleyball team (10-15, 8-9 CAA) fell to the College of Charleston Cougars (22-8, 14-3 CAA) in four sets on Friday afternoon at TD Arena.
Kinley Gomez led NU with her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs.
Millie Loehr also had a strong performance with 12 kills.
Northeastern's offense was guided by
Carly Cooper with 16 assists, and
Arina Sosinovica added 13 assists.
Defensively,
Nadia Koanui notched a team-high 21 digs, while
Beatrice Gennari and Sosinovica each had five blocks.
- Set One: The Cougars got off to an early 7-2 advantage, but the Huskies responded back. NU tallied the next three straight points highlighted by two kills from Georgia Stavrinides to trim the deficit to 7-5. Both teams traded points, with neither leading by more than three. After Charleston extended its lead to 16-11, NU won the next four points highlighted by three kills from Stavrinides (16-15). The Cougars led 21-16 down the stretch, but NU had a stellar comeback winning nine of the next 11 points to take the set win at 25-23.
- Set Two: Charleston led 10-3 and continued to push the pace. Blocks by Gennari and Sosinovica followed by a Gennari ace trimmed the deficit to 13-10, but the Cougars responded with six straight points (19-10). Charleston went on to win the set at 25-13.
- Set Three: The Cougars got off to a 14-7 advantage, but the Huskies chipped away at the deficit. Back-to-back kills from Kaylin Daniels made it 14-9, but Charleston won five of the next seven points (19-11). The Huskies battled, winning four straight points to 19-15, but the Cougars ultimately took the set at 25-16.
- Set Four: The Cougars led 12-7, but NU continued to battle in the frame. After an ace by the hosts extended the advantage to 20-11, the Huskies won eight of the next 10 points to cut the lead to 22-19. Gomez notched a kill to make it 23-20, but Charleston went on to seal the win with two of the next three points.
- Stavrinides and Gennari each had eight kills.
- Gabby Reeves had a career-high 14 digs and two service aces.
The Huskies will close out regular season play against the Cougars on Saturday, November 16. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. on FloVolleyball.
