BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Abby Jegede tallied a team-high 19 points, but a basket with seven seconds to go proved to be the difference as the Northeastern women's basketball team (1-5) fell to the LIU Sharks (2-6), 63-61, on Sunday afternoon at Steinberg Wellness Center.
Jegede had a strong day, shooting 8-of-10 from the floor with a career-high eight rebounds and three steals.
Maddie Vizza and
Taylor Holohan also had double-digit performances for the Huskies. Vizza tallied 15 points, all of which came from deep. The graduate student also notched 12 of her points in the second half. Holohan had a career-high 10 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.
LIU got off to a quick 5-2 advantage, but Jegede responded with a three to trim the deficit down to one at the 6:13 mark. Both teams traded points, with neither leading by more than two. Back-to-back jumpers by
Natalie Larrañaga and Holohan gave NU the lead at 11-8, but LIU responded back. After a layup by Holohan gave the Huskies the advantage at 15-13, the Sharks tallied a layup of their own to knot the game up at 15 heading into the second.
After being tied up at 17 at the 9:34 mark, LIU went on a 5-0 run to take a 22-17 advantage. The Huskies though, tallied five straight points to knot the score back up. A Vizza three put NU back ahead at 28-27, but the Sharks responded with a three of their own. LIU sank two free throws with 16 seconds to go, and took a 32-28 advantage into halftime.
The Sharks came out firing in the third, extending their lead to 37-28 after a 5-0 run. Vizza notched a three at the 5:37 mark to cut the advantage to six (39-33), but LIU immediately responded with a three. Jegede paced NU with eight of her points in the frame, but LIU led 53-41 going into fourth.
Vizza was unconscious for the Huskies in the fourth, tallying three of her buckets from deep, one of which gave NU a 58-57 advantage with 4:57 to go. A three-point play by
Yirsy Queliz had the Huskies up 61-58 at the 1:27 mark, but LIU knotted the score with a three 26 seconds later. The Sharks took possession with 32 seconds remaining, which ultimately set up the game-winning layup.
The Huskies will return to the court at UMass on Thursday, December 5. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
