BOSTON – The Northeastern men's basketball team (7-3) shot 59% in the second half and received a game-high 23 points from
Rashad King en route to a 78-75 victory over Colgate (2-8) on Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
Â
The Huskies trailed by as many as 10 in the game before turning it on with a 14-2 run midway through the second half to retake the lead for good and hold on for the win.Â
Â
King had an 8-of-13 afternoon from the floor along with eight rebounds, with 13 of his points coming in the second half. He was joined in double figures by
Harold Woods (13 points, six rebounds) and
Masai Troutman (12 points; 7-of-9 FT) for a Northeastern team that finished 27-of-50 overall and 5-of-15 from deep.
Â
Colgate, meanwhile, had five players reach double digits led by 15 from Brady Cummins, who just missed a three at the buzzer that would've forced overtime. The Raiders were 23-of-52 overall, 9-of-23 from long range and turned 18 Northeastern turnovers into 23 points.
Â
Northeastern led by as many as eight points in the first half, starting the game 6-of-12 from the field with King leading the way with 10 points, but a 17-3 Colgate run quickly put the visitors on top to take a 32-28 lead at the break.
Â
The Raiders, who received 10 first half points from Jones, hit 8-of-9 shots over nearly six minutes to go up by double digits before the Huskies closed the half on a 6-0 run to cut into the deficit.
Â
Northeastern found a spark out of the break, starting the second half on an 11-2 run to retake the lead at the Under-16, 39-34.
Â
It would stay within a possession for the next seven minutes of game time before the Huskies used an 11-0 run to jump back ahead by double digits with six minutes left, 62-52, capped by a bucket from
Youri Fritz (eight points, six rebounds, three steals).
Â
Colgate wouldn't go quietly down the stretch, though, frustrating Northeastern with its press late in the game to pull within one in the final minute. A pair of clutch free throws from
JB Frankel, however, put the Huskies back up by three with four seconds left before a three from Cummins at the buzzer went begging.
Â
The Huskies will be off this week for final exams before returning to action on Sunday afternoon at Old Dominion. Tip-off at Chartway Arena is set for 1 p.m.Â
