STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Playing without two of its top scorers, a shorthanded Northeastern men's basketball team (8-15, 3-7) gave Stony Brook (12-11, 5-5) everything it could handle on Saturday at Island Federal Arena, but a late 13-2 Seawolves run proved to be the difference, 59-55.
Â
The Huskies, who were without
Chris Doherty and
Luka Sakota in the game, overcame a 10-point first half deficit to lead by six late in the second half before Stony Brook closed the game hitting four its final seven shots to secure the win.
Â
Jared Turner had a team-high 15 points on 5-of-10 from deep off the bench for Northeastern, which shot 34% (19-of-56) on the night and 6-of-27 from long range. He was joined in double figures by
Harold Woods (13 points, eight rebounds), while
Masai Troutman added nine points and six boards.
Â
Stony Brook, meanwhile, got 14 points apiece from Aaron Clarke and Dean Noll, while Keenan Fitzmorris had 12 points for a Seawolves squad that was 23-of-58 overall and 5-of-15 from three.
Â
The Huskies recovered from a slow start to the first half in which the Seawolves bolted out to a 10-point lead in the opening 7:30 to score 11 of the half's final 15 points to head into the locker deadlocked at 22.
Â
Northeastern shot 32% as a team, but did the work on the defensive end to hold Stony Brook to 37% from the field, including a 3-of-12 showing over the final eight minutes of the half. Woods led NU with six points while Troutman added four points and five rebounds, including a thunderous dunk in the final minute to help the Huskies continued to claw back into it.
Â
The teams went punch-for-punch throughout the second half, with neither team leading by more than six points the rest of the way. Northeastern used a 10-2 run to take its first lead of the night with 16:04 left on a triple from Turner before another from long range gave the visitors their largest lead of the night at 37-31 with 14 minutes remaining.
Â
After Stony Brook chipped away to tie the game at 40 with 8:31 to go, Northeastern continued to grind and go up by six again following a bucket from
Collin Metcalf (seven points, six rebounds, three blocks) with 3:56 left, 52-46.
Â
That's when the Seawolves went to work, though, going on the 11-0 run to take the lead for good and ice it with free throws from Fitzmorris in the final seconds.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action on Thursday night when Northeastern travels to Buies Creek, N.C. for a date with Campbell. Tip-off at Gore Arena is set for 7 p.m. on FloHoops.
