BOSTON – Jaelyn Batts and
Derin Erdogan each tallied nine points apiece, but first-place Stony Brook (19-3, 9-2 CAA) was too much to handle as the Seawolves took down the Northeastern women's basketball team (8-13, 4-7 CAA) on Sunday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
As a team, the Huskies struggled offensively in the contest, shooting 27.5% (14-of-51) overall, and 17.6% (3-of-17) from three.
Stony Brook shot 41.7% (25-of-60) overall, and 39.3% (11-of-28) from deep. The Seawolves had three players in double-digits, with Khari Clark leading the way with 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Seawolves came out firing from beyond the arc in the first, making four of their first seven threes to lead 12-3.
Oralye Kiefer led the Huskies with six points in the frame, but Stony Brook edged Northeastern in second chance points (8-2), bench points (6-2), and points off turnovers (6-2) to take a 21-11 advantage into the second.
After Erdogan got Northeastern going in the second with a three, Stony Brook responded back with eight straight to balloon its lead up to 29-14 at the 7:05 mark. The Seawolves continued to push the pace with a 9-0 run down the stretch, and led 38-15 at halftime.
The visitors took over in the third quarter, shooting 43.8% overall (7-of-16) and 42.9% (3-of-7) from three. The Huskies were held to just one field goal in the frame, and Stony Brook took a dominant 38-point advantage into the fourth.
Batts shined for the Huskies in the fourth, tallying eight of her points in the frame. Northeastern shot 50% overall and from deep, but Stony Brook's leads were too much to overcome, and the visitors held on for the win.
