TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 23 Northeastern University baseball team (1-2) was unable to take the series from Arizona (2-1), falling on Sunday afternoon by a score of 9-3 at Hi Corbett Field.
- Senior second baseman Luke Beckstein led off with a base hit for the third straight game, belting a double down the third base line, but the Huskies were unable to get a run across in the first.
- It was the first game of the series where neither side was able to plate a run in the opening frame.
- The Wildcats were able to break through first in the bottom of the second with a five-run inning on two doubles and a single.
- Despite a shutout third inning from Jack Bowery in his NU debut, the Wildcats extended the lead in the fourth with three runs on a triple and home run to lead 8-0.
- The Huskies had several dangerous chances in the first five frames, including loading the bases in the fifth, but were unable to tally a run.
- Arizona notched another in the bottom of that frame to lead 9-0.
- Northeastern chipped into the lead in the seventh, scoring two on an RBI double by Jack Doyle, scoring pinch-hitter Matt Brinker, and an RBI single by Tyler MacGregor scoring Doyle.
- A two-out Mike Sirota RBI single in the ninth cut the deficit to six, but the Wildcats were able to end the game on a strikeout.
- The Northeastern pitching staff notched a season-high in strikeouts with eight on the day. Bowery had a team-high four punch outs, Cooper McGrath had two, and Jack Beauchesne and James Quinlivan each tallied one.
- McGrath, a grad. transfer, made his first appearance as a Husky, and working the eighth was sophomore Joseph Hauser, making his collegiate debut. He worked the full half inning allowing no runs, hits, or walks.
The Huskies are back on the road next weekend, playing their yearly exhibition with the Boston Red Sox this Friday, February 23 at 1:05 p.m. at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. The Huskies will follow that up with a two-game series in Fort Myers against the University of Minnesota at JetBlue Park and Lee Health Sports Complex.
