Huskies Strike First But Fall to Red Sox In Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the 19th meeting between the two teams, the Northeastern Huskies faced off with the Boston Red Sox, with the Sox taking the game by a final score of 7-2 at JetBlue Park on Friday afternoon.

Northeastern got off to a hot start, with a walk to Mike Sirota and an RBI single by Alex Lane to lead 1-0, and a shutdown inning for starting pitcher Aiven Cabral and the NU defense. The Huskies led 1-0 going into the second inning.

The Red Sox tied the game in the bottom of the second and took a 4-1 lead in the third inning on a three-run home run.

Cabral worked the first two innings, allowing just the one run, and Joseph Hauser took over in the second, notching a strikeout of Boston's Nathan Hickey.

The Sox put on another run in the fourth but NU pitcher James Morice notched two punch outs in the frame. The Huskies responded with a run of their own in the top of the fifth when Justin Bosland led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and Jack Goodman reached on an error allowing Bosland to score.

The Huskies loaded the bases in the fifth but Boston got out of the jam, holding the 5-2 lead.

In the fifth and sixth innings it was Brendan McFall and Ryan Griffin, respectively, each notching strikeouts of Red Sox batters late in the game. The Sox extended the lead to five runs, 7-2, after six.

With their last chance to get on the board with two outs, the Huskies pinch-hit pitcher Wyatt Scotti, who lined a single under the glove of the short stop into left field, but the Red Sox were able to collect the third out to end the seven-inning game.

The Huskies will play another game at JetBlue Park this Saturday, February 24th at 12:05 p.m. – Northeastern will be the home team, hosting the University of Minnesota. The two teams meet again at Lee Health Sports Complex the following Sunday, February 25th at 1:05 p.m.
