NEWARK, Del. – The Northeastern men's basketball team (12-18, 7-10) erased an 11-point second half deficit to take the lead with 4:06 to go, but Delaware (18-12, 10-7) answered by hitting four of its final five shots to escape with a 73-67 win over the Huskies on Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Â
Despite the setback, the Huskies have secured a first-round bye in next week's Jersey Mike's CAA Men's Basketball Championship following North Carolina A&T's loss to Towson.
Â
Harold Woods led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-20 shooting and nine rebounds, one shy of his first career double-double. He was joined in double figures by
Chris Doherty (17 points, nine rebounds) and
Rashad King (11 points, three steals) as the Huskies shot 40% as a team and went 5-of-20 from three-point range.
Â
The Blue Hens were sparked by 19 points and nine boards from Jyare Davis along with 16 points from Niels Lane. Delaware finished the night 23-of-52 overall, 6-of-19 from distance and 21-of-26 from the line.
Â
Northeastern came out hot, hitting six of its first 10 shots and leading by as many as nine points in the first half before Delaware used an 11-2 run to take a one-point lead into the break, 37-36.
Â
Woods and Doherty did damage for the Huskies, combining for 26 of Northeastern's 36 first half points and going 11-of-19 from the floor for an NU squad that shot 46% overall.
Â
Delaware, meanwhile, was paced by 12 points from Lane as the Blue Hens went 15-of-32 overall and 3-of-10 from distance.
Â
The Blue Hens opened the second half on a 14-4 run to take its largest lead of the night at 51-40 with 14:55 to go, with Lane and Davis combining for 13 of those points.
Â
Northeastern wouldn't go away, though, going on an 11-2 run over more than four minutes to make it a two-point game with less than 10 minutes to go, 53-51, led by six points from Troutman.
Â
A three from
Masai Troutman (nine points, six rebounds) with 4:06 to go gave Northeastern its first lead since late in the first half, but Delaware would answer with a three of its own from Gerald Drumgoole Jr. (11 points, seven rebounds) as the Blue Hens outscored NU 12-5 the rest of the way and icing the game with free throws.
Â
The Huskies will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when Northeastern takes on Drexel at 4 p.m. from the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
