Monmouth Tops Northeastern, 50-41

BOSTON – Derin Erdogan tallied a team-high 13 points, but the Northeastern women's basketball team (8-12, 4-6 CAA) fell to the Monmouth Hawks (14-7, 7-3 CAA), 50-41, on Friday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
 
Erdogan finished 6-of-18 from the field, and notched 11 of her points in the second half. The senior also led the Huskies with five rebounds and four assists. Deja Bristol also headlined Northeastern with 10 points.
 
As team, the Huskies struggled offensively, shooting 31.5% overall (17-of-54), and 17.4% (17-of-54) from three.
 
Monmouth shot 38.0% overall (19-of-50), but 41.7% (5-of-12) in the second quarter in which the Hawks outscored the Huskies 10-5 in the frame. Jania Hall led the visitors with 11 points and seven rebounds.
 
After a Maddie Vizza three got Northeastern off to a quick start, Monmouth responded with five straight points to take a 5-3 lead at the 8:29 mark. Both teams traded points for the majority of the stanza until the Hawks went on a 7-0 run to extend their advantage to 14-10 with 1:58 to go. Monmouth shot 46.7% (7-of-15) in the frame, and took a 17-14 lead into the second.
 
In the second, Monmouth continued to push the pace with four straight points, extending its advantage to 21-14 at the 7:47 mark. A three by Yirsy Queliz trimmed the deficit to 21-17, but the Hawks went on to score six straight to ultimately take a 27-19 lead into the third.
 
Monmouth tallied its largest advantage of the game at the 5:08 mark of the third, leading 37-23. Erdogan notched three straight baskets for Northeastern with two minutes to go in the frame, but Monmouth led 39-32 heading into the fourth.
 
The Hawks continued to remain in front, tallying six straight points to lead 45-34 in the fourth. Northeastern went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three-point by Erdogan at the 2:38 mark to trim the deficit to 45-41, but Monmouth responded with five straight points to put the game out of reach for good.
 
The Huskies will host Stony Brook in their Think Pink Game on Sunday, February 11. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on NESN & FloHoops.
