Huskies Take Down Monarchs 17-9 In Game Three

NORFOLK, Va. – In a series-deciding game three, the Northeastern Huskies (8-4) defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs (9-6) by a score of 17-9 at Bud Metheny Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies scored in every inning except the seventh, putting up 10 runs in the first three innings as starting pitcher Wyatt Scotti blanked the Monarchs in the opening frames. The Huskies were led by Alex Lane (3-for-6, HR, 6 RBI) and Tyler MacGregor (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs). Mike Sirota, Luke Beckstein, Jimmy Sullivan, and Carmelo Musacchia also all notched two hits in the game.

  • Northeastern got off to a hot start in the first inning with back to back base hits from Tyler MacGregor and Mike Sirota, setting up a three-run home run for cleanup man Alex Lane, to lead 3-0 after one.
  • The Huskies tacked on three more in the second, on a Luke Beckstein RBI single, a Carmelo Musacchia dirt ball read on a passed ball, and an RBI single by Lane.
  • NU loaded the bases in the top of the third, and RBI walks by MacGregor and Sirota made it 8-0, and an RBI single by Lane made it 10-0.
  • Northeastern tacked on one more in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Carmelo Musacchia, scoring Justin Bosland, to extend the lead to 11-0.
  • Scotti and the NU defense held the Monarchs off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when they notched an RBI double down the right field line, to cut the lead down to nine at 11-2.
  • Scotti ended his day after four, finishing with five punch outs, and just the two runs on five hits and two walks allowed.
  • MacGregor added a run back in the fifth, hitting a leadoff double, taking third on a wild pitch, and scoring on a passed ball to make it 12-2.
  • The Huskies continued their scoring streak into the sixth inning when Jack Goodman hit a leadoff triple then ran home on a wild pitch to make it 13-2, and an RBI single by Beckstein, followed by another wild pitch scored Jimmy Sullivan and Musacchia to make it 15-2.
  • The Monarchs answered back in the sixth, plating four runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead down to nine, 15-6.
  • ODU's bullpen held Northeastern scoreless for the first time in the top of the seventh, but the Huskies hopped back on the scoreboard in the eighth with a two-out RBI single by MacGregor, scoring Sullivan for the 16-6 lead.
  • The Monarchs added three more in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead back down to seven, but Sullivan hit an RBI single to shallow center to extend the lead to 17-9.
  • The bullpen trio of Dennis Colleran (2.0, 1K), Charlie Walker (1.1, 2K) and James Quinlivan (1.2) closed out the contest, blanking the Monarchs in the fifth, seventh, and ninth innings.
  • It's the most runs scored for the Huskies since last year's Beanpot consolation game, an 18-11 win over UMass.

The Huskies return home to New England for their next seven games – including two home midweek games this Tuesday, March 12th and Wednesday, March 13th against Sacred Heart and Bryant. Both games begin at 2:30 p.m. and will stream on FloBaseball.
