BROOKLINE, Mass. – In their home opener at Friedman Diamond, the Northeastern Huskies (9-4) rolled past the Sacred Heart Pioneers (3-10) by a final score of 10-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Huskies needed just three pitchers to blank the Pioneers, with the offense plating the 10
th run in the bottom of the seventh, and the game ended due to the pre-agreed upon run rule.
NU got multi-hit games from
Carmelo Musacchia,
Mike Sirota,
Alex Lane, and
Cam Maldonado in a day where the offense totaled 10 runs on 11 hits, and the defense played a clean error-less game. Starter
Michael Gemma worked until the fifth inning, striking out a career-high five batters.
- The Huskies hopped on the scoreboard early with a dropped infield fly by the Pioneers, and Mike Sirota, who reached on a single and stole second, scored from second on the drop.
- NU extended the lead in the bottom of the third inning with two early base runners – Cam Maldonado reached on a single and stole second, and Carmelo Musacchia reached on a walk. Both runners stole second and third two pitches later.
- With no outs, Tyler MacGregor hit a sac fly to shallow left-center, and Maldonado ran home for the 2-0 lead.
- Musacchia made it to third after a fly out and Alex Lane hit him home with an RBI single, extending his hit streak to 14 games.
- The Huskies tallied five runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to eight runs. NU got RBIs from Maldonado on a double, Musacchia on a single, Jack Goodman on a double, and Justin Bosland on a ground-rule double.
- An Alex Lane RBI double opened up the seventh, and with the bases loaded, Lane ran home on an infield ground out, plating the 10th run and ending the game.
- Gemma was relieved by Brendan McFall making his season debut, working two scoreless innings allowing just one hit and no walks. He notched his first strike out as a Husky in his first inning.
- Ryan Griffin came on for the top of the seventh, allowing one hit and one walk but striking out two.
- It's the second shutout of the season for NU's pitching staff, and third win of the season holding the opponent to two runs or fewer.
The Huskies remain home to face the Bryant Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 2:35 p.m. on FloBaseball.
