BOSTON – Battling windy conditions, the Northeastern men's rowing team fell to Brown in a tightly contested first varsity race by 1.6 seconds on Saturday morning on the Charles River.
The win gave the Dreissigacker Cup back to the Bears, as the Huskies won the last matchup between the teams in 2023.
In the first varsity, both boats got off to a level start. Through the second minute of the race though, Brown got out to a five seat lead. Paced by coxswain
Will Dempsey and with
Alexander Abuhoff in the stroke seat, Northeastern countered through the middle 1000-meter mark through the remainder of the course. In the finishing section, NU continued to push the Bears closing the margin to roughly four seats to the finish. Brown crossed the line first at 6:08.1, and the Huskies finished at 6:09.7.
It was a close race in the second varsity as coxswain
Nick Walding and stroke seat
Aidan Murphy led Northeastern to a strong five seat advantage in the opening 500 meters. The Huskies continued to extend their advantage, with the stroke seat on Brown's bow approaching the Mass Ave. Bridge. With 400 meters to go, Brown made a late push, but Northeastern held on to cross the line .7 seconds ahead of the Bears at 6:18.7.
In the third varsity race, NU got off to an early lead, holding onto a five-seat lead through the first 750-meters. At the 750 though, Brown pulled level, and both crews raced hard through the 1250-meter mark where the Bears pulled away in the closing section of the race. Brown finished at 6:33.7, and Northeastern finished at 6:40.3.
In the fourth varsity, the Bears got off to a quick start, and never looked back, taking the race at 6:48.8. Northeastern though, had a strong second half, crossing the line at 6:59.7, ahead of Brown's fifth varsity at 7:03.7.
The Huskies will be back on the Charles on Wednesday, April 24 against Harvard for the Smith Cup.
