BROOKLINE, Mass. – Down 0-1 in the weekend series, Northeastern baseball (28-10, 10-4 CAA) defeated UNCW (25-14, 11-3 CAA) on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond by a final score of 10-7.
Designated hitter
Alex Lane had a perfect day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with two singles and three homers, notching five RBIs, including the game-tying run in the seventh and the go-ahead runs in the eighth. The bullpen delivered three shutout innings to end the contest, with reliever
Dennis Colleran (1-0) and
Jack Beauchesne (SV, 4) finishing out the contest strong.
- The Huskies jumped onto the scoreboard first with a lead off homer in the second inning from Alex Lane. He was followed by Jimmy Sullivan, with a no-out double down the line, and a pair of ground outs moved him to third and scored him for the 2-0 lead.
- The Seahawks hit a grand slam in the third inning to take the lead, 4-2. NU responded with a two-RBI double from Mike Sirota to tie the game, followed by an RBI single from Tyler MacGregor to retake the lead at 5-4.
- UNCW tied the game back up in the fourth with an RBI ground out, and retook the lead two innings later on a two-RBI single to lead 7-5.
- With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies cut into the deficit with a bases-loaded walk to Mike Sirota, scoring Ryan Gerety who reached on a single.
- Lane tied the game back up at 7-7 , leading off the seventh inning with his second home run of the game.
- Coming in for the top of the eighth was Dennis Colleran, and despite a one-out single and walk allowed, put up a zero on the scoreboard with a strike out and a pick-off, keeping the game tied for the bottom of the inning.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Jack Goodman reached on a throwing error, and Tyler MacGregor earned a two out walk, setting up Alex Lane for his third home run of the game, a three-run blast that gave Northeastern the lead for good at 10-7.
- Jack Beauchesne worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning to secure his fourth save of the season, and the series-tying win. Colleran earned the win, his first of the season.
- It was Lane's first three-HR game of his career, as he's up to 62 RBI on the year, which is one shy of tying the Northeastern single-season record and places him at the top of the national leader board.
