BOSTON – Under clear, overcast skies with good racing conditions, the Northeastern men's rowing team took care of business against Boston University, capturing the Arlett Cup in the first varsity Saturday morning on the Charles River.
Â
The first varsity got off to a fast start at 45 strokes per minute, staying level with the Terriers through the first 500-meters. Paced by coxswain
Will Dempsey with
Alexander Abuhoff in the stroke seat, Northeastern took two seats on BU at the 650-meter mark before opening its advantage to nearly half a length approaching the Mass Ave. Bridge. The Huskies would make their move in the third 500, building an open water lead with 500-meters to go to retain the Arlett Cup at 5:59.0, with Boston University clocking in at 6:06.1.
Â
Since 1978, the crews have competed for the Arlett Cup, named for the late Ernie Arlett, Northeastern's first men's rowing coach. Since then, the Huskies have won 34 of the 46 races, including 17 of the last 22, and eight of the last 11.
Â
It was a tightly contested race in the second varsity as coxswain
Nick Walding and stroke seat
Aidan Murphy led Northeastern to a two-seat lead at 38 strokes per minute in the opening 500 meters. The Terriers, though, met the Huskies' speed in the second 500 to come back and take a two-seat edge of its own through the bridge. But Northeastern wouldn't be denied, making its move in the third 500 to overtake the Terriers at the MIT Boathouse and win by nearly a length at 6:00.1.
Â
The third varsity saw the Terriers jump out to a two seat lead through the first 500 meters, slowly increasing its margin midway through the race. Northeastern wouldn't go quietly, making a move in the third 500 in an attempt to cut into the deficit, but Boston University was able to hold on for the victory at 6:10.7.
Â
It was a similar result in the fourth varsity as the Terriers grabbed a two-seat advantage in the second 500-meters and never looked back, taking the race at 6:16.4.
Â
The Huskies will be back on the water next Saturday to host Brown for the Dreissigacker Cup.
