TOWSON, Md. – In a Sunday rubber match, the Northeastern Huskies (24-7, 7-2 CAA) won their third straight CAA series, defeating the Towson Tigers (8-22, 3-6 CAA) by a score of 9-4 on Sunday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
The Huskies led 3-0 after six innings, but after a Tiger rally in the seventh inning to lead, Northeastern had to start a rally of their own to erase a one-run deficit, tying the game with a sacrifice bunt by
Luke Beckstein and scoring the go-ahead run off the bat of
Tyler MacGregor in the eighth. Northeastern totaled six runs in the eighth inning to put the game away, 9-4.
- Northeastern was able to score first, plating two runs in the top of the second inning. After a lead off double from Jack Doyle, and a hit-by-pitch to Jack Goodman, a two-out dropped fly ball by an outfielder allowed both runners to score as Carmelo Musacchia ran to second on the play.
- The Huskies added a third run in the third inning, on a bases-loaded infield grounder that Jack Goodman was able to beat out at first for the fielder's choice, preventing the double play and notching an RBI as Tyler MacGregor ran home from third.
- Starting pitcher Wyatt Scotti spun a gem with six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, no walks, and striking out six. He left the game with a 3-0 lead.
- After shutting out the Tigers for the opening six innings, the Huskies allowed four unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lose the lead, 4-3.
- Down by a run, the Huskies got the lead off batter Harrison Feinberg on base with a single, Carmelo Musacchia reached on a fielder's choice with Feinberg safe on an error, and a sacrifice bunt from Beckstein scored Feinberg to tie the game back up at 4-4.
- The Huskies surged for another five runs in the inning on an RBI single from MacGregor, a bases loaded walk by Jack Doyle, and a bases-clearing double by Gregory Bozzo to lead 9-4.
- In the eighth, Dennis Colleran provided a shutdown 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to preserve the five-run lead.
- Jack Beauchesne worked the bottom of the ninth allowing just one hit.
- The Huskies have now won three straight CAA series, and seven straight weekend series.
- It's Northeastern's fourth win of the season, first in CAA play, when trailing after seven innings.
The Huskies return home to Boston to play in the Baseball Beanpot Championship game this Tuesday, April 9 at Boston College. Start time for the championship game is 5 p.m. at Harrington Athletics Village.
