BOSTON - The Northeastern University men's soccer team kicks off the 2024 campaign this Thursday evening, August 22nd in Piscataway, New Jersey as the Huskies take on Rutgers at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on Big10 Network +.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
1. SCORING CHANCES
Northeastern returns five of its top seven goal scorers from the 2023 season to the 2024 lineup - junior
Fraser Brown led all Huskies with five goals on the season, followed by seniors
Tobias Wangerud (3),
Fabrizio Cubeddu (2), and
Sebastian Restrepo (2). Sophomore defender
Mathias Hille also notched two goals in his 2023 rookie campaign, scoring one against Rutgers in last season's match up.
2. MARK IT EIGHT
The Huskies and the Scarlet Knights have played just one game in their series history, a game that saw eight total goals scored in a 4-4 draw last October at a rainy Parsons Field. Senior
Tobias Wangerud notched a brace to tie the game at 1-1 and 2-2, with
Mathias Hille hitting a header off a cross to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead. After two goals in the 81st and 84th minute by Rutgers, a last grasp by the Huskies resulted in a
Fraser Brown goal with just under three minutes left in regulation to notch the tie.
3. A NEW ERA
Northeastern welcomes new head coach
Jeremy Bonomo, the eighth coach in program history, from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Coach Bonomo brings with him 12 years of NCAA head coaching experience, and is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance with the Phoenix in 2023.
The Huskies return home on Tuesday, August 27th for their home opener against Boston University - kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. and will stream on FloFC.
