QUEENS, N.Y. – Paced by a career day from
Millie Loehr, the Northeastern volleyball team (1-2) picked up its first victory of the season, taking down the Niagara Purple Eagles (1-2) in four sets on the final day of the St. John's Invitational.
Loehr had a stellar performance, tallying a double-double with 15 kills (one shy of a career high) on .414 hitting, and a career-high 10 blocks. The Raleigh, North Carolina native was also tabbed to the St. John's Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Northeastern def. Niagara: 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15
- Set One: The Huskies got off to an early 5-1 advantage, capped off by two kills from Loehr. NU continued to hold onto the momentum, extending the lead to 11-5 after back-to-back kills from Kinley Gomez and a Loehr ace. Loehr had six kills on .750 hitting in the frame, and the Huskies won 25-22.
- Set Two: The Purple Eagles led 8-3, but Northeastern chipped away at the deficit. A kill by Georgia Stavrinides made it 13-11, but Niagara responded back with the next two points. Back-to-back points by NU down the stretch cut the advantage to 24-22, but Niagara held on to take the set at 25-22.
- Set Three: Loehr and Stavrinides were the story for NU in the frame, each tallying two kills to propel the Huskies to a 5-0 lead. Niagara though, responded right back with five points to knot the set back up. Both teams traded points for the majority of the set, with neither leading by more than one. After being tied at 23, Gomez tallied back-to-back kills to give the Huskies the set win (25-23).
- Set Four: After Niagara stormed out to a 13-5 lead, Northeastern took over the set. The Huskies went on a 18-0 run to balloon their lead up to 23-13. Northeastern's defense stood tall, out blocking Niagara nine to one in the frame to win the set in dominant fashion at 25-15.
- Nadia Koanui tallied a team-high 21 digs.
- Olivia Alicante chipped in with five kills, an ace, and 10 digs.
- Carly Cooper and Arina Sosinovica each dished out 17 assists.
- Stavrinides had eight kills, seven digs, and four blocks.
- Gomez notched seven kills, two aces, and career-high five blocks.
- As a team, NU tallied 14 blocks compared to Niagara's seven.
The Huskies will return to the court in their home opener on Friday, September 6 against Lindenwood. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. on FloVolleyball.
