BOSTON – Kinley Gomez and
Jane Nelson each tallied double-digit kills to lead the Northeastern volleyball team (2-2) to a home opener sweep over Lindenwood (2-3) on Friday evening at the Cabot Center.
Gomez tallied 10 kills on .312 hitting, and Nelson recorded her first collegiate double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
As a team, the Huskies' defense was strong, notching 11 total blocks compared to six by the Lions.
- Set One: Both teams traded points, with neither leading by more than two. The Huskies went on a 3-0 run, capped off by blocks from Nelson and Beatrice Gennari to lead 13-9, and didn't look back. Back-to-back kills by Gomez down the stretch gave NU a 21-16 advantage, and ultimately took the set at 25-22. Gomez paced NU with four kills in frame, and defensively the Huskies out blocked Lindenwood seven to one.
- Set Two: The Huskies stormed out to a 6-0 advantage, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Georgia Stavrinides and an ace by Gomez. A few points later, Northeastern's defense continued to be the story, as back-to-back blocks extended the advantage to 14-9. Lindenwood made a push down the stretch and knotted the frame up at 20, but the Huskies responded with three straight points. A kill by Nelson made it 24-21, and a Lindenwood error sealed the set win at 25-21.
- Set Three: NU got off to a 10-6 advantage, capped off by another Nelson kill. The Huskies continued to hold onto the momentum in the frame, as back-to-back errors by the visitors down the stretch made 22-19. Northeastern continued to capitalize off Lindenwood miscues to lead 24-20, and Gomez ended the set in style with an ace (25-20).
- Nadia Koanui led the Huskies with 12 digs.
- Carly Cooper dished out a team-high 17 assists.
- Millie Loehr had six kills on .429 hitting with four blocks.
- Gennari chipped in with five kills and five blocks.
- Arina Sosinovica tallied 12 assists and five blocks.
The Huskies will return to Solomon Court to face FGCU on Saturday, September 7. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. on FloVolleyball.
