SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (2-4, 0-0 CAA) went toe-to-toe against No. 14 Syracuse Orange (3-1, 0-0 ACC) but fell by a score of 2-0 on Friday evening.
- Syracuse applied early pressure on the Northeastern defense with two penalty corners. However, a goal-line clearance from graduate student back Caroline Sweeney and a diving save from senior goalkeeper Kristi Merashoff kept the game scoreless.
- The Husky defense continued to hold their own in the first, with Merashoff recording four first quarter saves and another three early in the second.
- Syracuse found the opening goal with 4:06 remaining in the half by taking advantage of a 1-on-1 opportunity, which they converted to take a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
- Despite the host's failure to convert on their eighth penalty corner, the Orange kept applying pressure. Ultimately, Syracuse doubled the lead after a deflection directed the ball underneath the goalkeepers' pads to trickle slowly into the cage. Syracuse would hold on to take a 2-0 victory.
- Northeastern's penalty corner kill was excellent from start to finish, defending all 11 Syracuse penalty scoring opportunities.
- Merashoff matched a season-high of nine saves in the contest.
Northeastern heads back to Massachusetts for a matchup at Holy Cross on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 3 p.m. (EST). The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
