Northeastern Drops Conference Opener To Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (3-5, 0-1 CAA) played a defensively solid contest but ultimately lost by a 1-0 scoreline to the Drexel Dragons (3-3, 1-0 CAA) Friday afternoon.

  • The hosts looked to take the lead early into the first quarter, earning a penalty corner less than a minute in. Senior goalkeeper Kristi Merashoff and the Huskies defended the penalty corner with ease, and would go on to kill three more in the quarter to keep the game tied 0-0.
  • Northeastern found its first scoring opportunity 5:31 into the second, as senior forward India Cotter drove into the Dragon circle and sent a shot to the lower right side of the cage. But the Drexel goalkeeper made a save to keep it scoreless. The Huskies continued to battle for the first goal, earning two penalty corners before halftime, neither of which could be converted.
  • After an even third quarter in which both sides could not find the go-ahead goal, Northeastern received two more penalty corners early in the fourth. However, the Dragon defense hunkered down, not allowing any shots to reach the cage.
  • With 6:15 remaining in the game, Drexel used a reset on the 25-yard line to enter the Northeastern circle and place a shot into the bottom left corner, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Dragons would hold on to take the one goal victory.
  • Despite the loss, Northeastern was perfect in penalty kills for its third straight game, successfully defending all 10 Drexel penalty corners.

After three weeks on the road, Northeastern returns to Dedham field for its Youth & Alumni game against Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 12 p.m. (EST). The game will be streamed on FloSports.
