DEDHAM, Mass — The Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (3-6, 0-1 CAA) returned to Dedham Field for the first time in three weeks to host Youth and Alumni Day but fell to the Virginia Commonwealth Rams (3-3, 0-1 A10) 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon.
- Graduate student forward Mak Graves opened the scoring with seconds remaining in the first quarter after the Huskies earned a penalty corner. Graduate student back Caroline Sweeney and senior back Maria Armaganian perfectly set up the play to allow Graves to rifle one into the bottom of the cage, giving the hosts a 1-0 into the break.
- Northeastern doubled its advantage midway through the second when senior midfielder Lara Taylor broke away and carried the ball into the VCU circle, where she assisted a perfectly placed ball to junior forward Emmy Stubbs, who calmly finished it to make it 2-0.
- Virginia Commonwealth cut the lead with 3:22 remaining, converting on a penalty corner from the edge of the circle to make the scoreline 2-1 going into halftime.
- After a scoreless third quarter, the Rams scored the equalizer from a tap-in off a save with 1:49 remaining, sending the game into overtime.
- In overtime, Virginia Commonwealth found the ball on the edge of the circle with 9.5 seconds remaining, sending a hard shot past the goalkeeper in the bottom left corner to take a 3-2 decision.
Northeastern stays at home for a matchup against UMass Lowell on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 12 p.m. (EST). The game will be available to stream on FloSports.
