BOSTON – Paced by double-digit performances by
Kinley Gomez and
Georgia Stavrinides, the Northeastern volleyball team (3-6, 1-0 CAA) picked up its first CAA win of the season with a four-set victory over UNCW (3-5, 0-1 CAA) on Saturday afternoon.
Gomez led the Huskies with a career-high 15 kills and 10 digs, recording her second double-double of the season. Stavrinides notched a season-high 11 kills and four blocks.
- Set One: Both teams traded points, with neither leading by more than two. Back-to-back kills by Brynn Smith gave NU a 13-9 advantage, and the Huskies continued to push the pace. A few points later, another kill by Smith and blocks from Millie Loehr and Stavrinides extended the lead to 21-17. Northeastern didn't look back as a Smith ace and Gomez kill sealed the set win at 25-20.
- Set Two: Northeastern got off to an early 5-3 lead, capped off by an ace and kill by Gomez. The Huskies continued to roll, tallying four straight points to extend the advantage to 17-11. Stavrinides tallied four of her kills in the frame, two of which came down the stretch to give the Huskies the set victory at 25-19.
- Set Three: The visitors had an early 8-5 advantage and held onto the lead for the entire frame. An error by UNCW and a Gomez kill trimmed the deficit to 13-11, but the Seahawks responded back. UNCW hit .303 in the set and won at 25-19.
- Set Four: Northeastern stormed out to a 7-1 lead and held onto the momentum. The Huskies tallied five straight points to extend the advantage to 17-11, and down the stretch an ace by Nadia Koanui ended the match at 25-17. NU was strong from the service line in the frame with three aces, compared to none by UNCW.
- Koanui tallied a team-high 14 digs.
- Carly Cooper dished out a team-high 22 assists and six digs.
- Loehr had nine kills on .333 hitting with four blocks.
- Smith chipped in with eight kills and a team-high three aces.
- Sahitya Krishnamurthy recorded 13 digs.
Northeastern will close out play against the Seahawks on Sunday, September 22. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. on FloVolleyball.
