BOSTON – Three Huskies tallied double-digit kills as the Northeastern volleyball team (4-6, 2-0 CAA) knocked off UNCW (3-6, 0-2 CAA) in four sets on Sunday afternoon at the Cabot Center. With the victory, Northeastern completed the weekend sweep over the Seahawks.
For the second straight match,
Kinley Gomez tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Georgia Stavrinides also had another strong performance with 12 kills on .333 hitting, and
Millie Loehr had 11 kills and six blocks.
On defense, Northeastern was led by
Nadia Koanui with 18 digs while
Kaylin Daniels had a career-high nine blocks.
- Set One: The two teams opened the set trading leads. The Huskies pulled ahead at 9-6 with three straight points, capped off by a Stavrinides kill. A few points later, UNCW went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 advantage. Down the stretch, the Huskies tallied five straight points of their own to take a 22-18 lead, and a solo block by Stavrinides sealed the set win at 25-20.
- Set Two: The Huskies got off to a 9-3 lead, highlighted by two aces from Gomez. Northeastern continued to push the pace, extending its advantage to 15-8 after five straight points. The visitors trimmed the deficit to 20-15, but the Huskies responded back. Stavrinides paced NU with five of her kills in the frame on .444 hitting.
- Set Three: Both teams traded points to open the set. After a kill by Gomez knotted the score up at 12, UNCW tallied the next four points to take the lead. The frame featured 12 ties, with UNCW capturing the set with the final two points at 25-23.
- Set Four: The Seahawks got off to an early 8-5 advantage, but NU responded right back. After Northeastern tallied three points to knot the score up, the two teams traded points. After holding onto a slim 17-16 lead, NU tallied six straight points to take a commanding 23-16 advantage. The Huskies notched the final two points of the set, highlighted by Gomez's last kill of the match to seal the win (25-18).
- Carly Cooper recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs. Arina Sosovinica also added 15 assists.
- Northeastern had 13 team blocks.
- The Huskies were strong from the service line with nine aces, five of which came from Gomez.
Northeastern will hit the road to face North Carolina A&T on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28.
