Huskies Win Nine Goal Thriller Against UMass Lowell

DEDHAM, Mass — Graduate student Lauren Rowe and the Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (4-6, 0-1 CAA) used a week long break to prepare and propel them to a 6-3 victory over the UMass Lowell River Hawks (4-5, 0-1 AE) on Sunday afternoon.
  • The River Hawks opened the scoring under three minutes into the game from a penalty corner. Northeastern responded three minutes later with an equalizer after junior Emilia Adragna's shot wasn't cleared cleanly, allowing Rowe to track the ball and slot it into the top left corner and even the score at 1-1.
  • The Huskies then took the lead with a penalty corner of their own, as graduate student Mak Graves rifled a shot from the edge of the circle that deflected off of Rowe's stick and past the River Hawks goalkeeper to give the hosts a 2-1 edge going into the second.
  • With 1:49 remaining in the half, Rowe collected her third goal of the day from another penalty corner to extend the lead to 3-1. The Huskies earned another penalty corner 29 seconds later, where graduate student Caroline Sweeney scored her second of the season after a shot deflected off the post and landed at the feet of the defender to make it 4-1 going into halftime.
  • UMass Lowell continued to battle, grabbing their second goal of the afternoon on another penalty corner to cut into the Northeastern lead.
  • With just over four minutes left in the contest, the River Hawks pulled their goalie to cut into the Husky lead. However, Northeastern regained a three-goal advantage after Rowe lobbed a long ball to sophomore forward Alex Mega, who carefully carried the ball into the opposing circle and tapped it into the empty net to make it 5-2.
  • After UMass Lowell responded with their third goal 13 seconds later, Emmy Stubbs scored the Huskies' sixth of the game and her sixth of the season. Northeastern would go on to earn a 6-3 victory.
  • Rowe collected her first hat trick since Northeastern's 4-0 victory against Towson on Oct. 22, 2021, and the fourth in her career.
  • Sunday's game saw the Huskies score the most goals in a single game since last year's 6-2 win against Hofstra.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Laine Cabell made her collegiate debut, logging seven minutes and a save.
Northeastern concludes its homestand with a CAA matchup against William & Mary on Friday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. The contest will be the Cancer Awareness Game and will be streamed on FloSports.
