Story Links

BOSTON – Three Huskies tallied double-digit kills, but the Northeastern volleyball team (2-4) dropped a five-set battle to the Dartmouth Big Green (2-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Cabot Center.

Jane Nelson led the Huskies on offense with her best collegiate performance so far with 17 kills on .318 hitting. Kinley Gomez and Beatrice Gennari also had career-best performances for Northeastern. Gomez tallied a career-high 12 kills and 10 digs, marking her second double-double of the season, and Gennari had a career-high 10 kills on .500 hitting with seven blocks.

In the back row, Nadia Koanui had a career day as well. Koanui led NU with a career-best 27 digs. The Huskies' libero was stellar throughout the weekend with double-digit digs in every match, earning Northeastern Invitational All-Tournament Team accolades.
  • Set One: Both teams traded points to begin the frame, with neither leading by more than one. The Big Green tallied three straight points to lead 8-6 and continued to hold onto the momentum. Dartmouth increased its advantage to 16-10, but Northeastern trimmed the deficit to 16-15 after an ace by Nelson. A kill by Dartmouth down the stretch made it 23-19, and the Big Green took the set at 25-22.
  • Set Two: Northeastern came out strong in the frame, leading 7-3 after blocks by Nelson and Millie Loehr. Dartmouth though, fought back to eventually tie the score at nine. The two teams went back and forth until NU tallied four straight points down the stretch to pull ahead at 23-22. Dartmouth knotted the score up at 23, but kills by Georgia Stavrinides and Gennari sealed the set win at 25-23.
  • Set Three: NU got off to an early 6-3 lead, capped off by an ace by Gomez. Dartmouth trimmed Northeastern's advantage throughout the set but was unable to pull ahead. The Big Green though, had no answer for Nelson in the frame, leading Northeastern with five kills on.455 hitting, two of which were the Huskies' last two points to seal the set win at 25-23.
  • Set Four: Back and forth play continued in the frame, with neither team leading by more than one. Dartmouth began to pull away towards the end of the stanza to lead 18-15, and eventually closed the set with four straight points (25-19).
  • Set Five: Northeastern had a 10-7 lead after kills from Loehr and Nelson, but Dartmouth responded with two straight points to keep the score close. The visitors knotted the score up at 11 and tallied four of the next five points to win the set at 15-12.
  • Carly Cooper dished out a team-high 24 assists.
  • Gabby Reeves had a strong defensive performance with 13 digs.
  • Loehr tallied eight kills and six blocks.
