BOSTON, MA --Abby Jegede scored 19 points and Yirsy Quéliz had 13 more, but the Northeastern women's basketball team fell to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, 51-48, in the Cabot Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies (1-11, 0-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Jegede, who had 19 points. Quéliz added 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Natalie Larrañaga helped out with 10 points.
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Northeastern went on an 8-0 run with 7:16 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Quéliz , to take a 10-2 lead. The Huskies surrendered their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime with the score tied 26-26. Northeastern saw non-starters score three of its eight total points off the bench in the quarter.
Northeastern started the third quarter on a high note, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Quéliz , to grab a 32-26 lead with 9:17 to go in the third. UNC Wilmington responded to seize a 39-36 lead entering the fourth quarter.
UNC Wilmington kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 48-43 advantage before Northeastern went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jegede's jumper, to even the score at 48 all with 5:17 to go in the contest. The Huskies could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Seahawks outscored them 3-0 the rest of the way to hand Northeastern the 51-48 loss.
Northeastern will next travel to face Towson on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m.
