BOSTON – The Northeastern men's basketball team (11-9, 3-4) received a career-high 19 points from
JB Frankel, while
Rashad King scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half to lead the Huskies past Drexel (11-9, 3-4) on Thursday night at Matthews Arena, 70-61.
Â
Frankel, who is now averaging 12.1 points per game and shooting 52% in league action, finished the night 6-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-6 from three-point range to lead a Northeastern squad that shot 26-of-53 overall and 6-of-11 from long range.
Â
King, meanwhile, continued to eat up minutes for the Huskies, playing all but 16 seconds in the game and going 6-of-20 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line to go along with a team-high seven rebounds and seven assists.
Â
Yame Butler led the Dragons with 17 points and seven rebounds before being assessed a flagrant two with 5:29 remaining in regulation which proved to be a turning point in the contest. Drexel was 24-of-54 overall and 3-of-18 from deep.
Â
The Huskies shot 56% from the field including 4-of-5 from deep in the first half, leading by as many as nine before taking a 32-26 lead into the locker room. Northeastern leaned on Frankel early, who went for 11 points on 4-of-6 overall (3-of-4 from deep) to lead all scorers, while Fritz added eight points and three boards.
Â
Drexel, meanwhile, used a balanced attack in the opening 20 minutes and used a 7-0 run late to cut into the deficit. The Dragons went 10-fo-26 overall and 1-of-6 from long range in the first half.
Â
The Dragons came out of the break hot, hitting nine of their first 11 shots of the second half during a 15-4 run to take their first lead of the night less than four minutes into the half, 38-36.
Â
Drexel would lead by as many as five before the Huskies turned it on, going on a 17-4 run over six minutes to retake the lead with seven minutes left, 56-48, capped by a tip-in slam from Metcalf that brought the Northeastern crowd to its feet.
Â
Despite a Drexel attempt to bring the deficit back down to two possessions, a dunk from Fritz in transition and a thunderous slam from King gave the hosts a 10-point cushion with less than two minutes left.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action on Monday night when Northeastern plays host to Towson. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. from Matthews Arena on the CBS Sports Network.
