STONY BROOK, NY -- Alyssa Staten grabbed 10 rebounds, but the Northeastern women's basketball team fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves 62-46 on the road Friday.
Yirsy Quéliz led the Huskies (1-14, 0-6) with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Staten also tacked on four points and two blocks with with her 10 rebounds, and Abigail Jegede helped out with eight points and eight rebounds.
Northeastern grabbed 38 rebounds in Friday's game compared to Stony Brook's 26, led by Staten's 10 boards. The Huskies also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into 11 second chance points.
How It Happened
Northeastern fell behind 14-5 at the end of the first quarter. Quéliz recorded all five points for the Huskies.
Stony Brook kept adding to that lead, building an 18-5 advantage before Northeastern went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a corner three from Camille Clement to narrow its deficit to 20-19. Stony Brook responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Huskies trailing 25-19 heading into halftime.
Northeastern came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Maria Sánchez Pitarch, to trim its deficit to 25-24 with 8:04 to go in the third. Stony Brook countered and stretched its lead to 46-30 heading into the fourth. Northeastern played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint.
Stony Brook widened its lead in the fourth, building a 56-34 advantage before Northeastern went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Queliz's layup, to shrink the deficit to 56-40 with 3:45 to go in the contest. The Huskies were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 62-46.
Northeastern took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 16 points in the paint. Samia Greene also recorded her first collegiate basket, finishing with four points and two rebounds.
Next, the Huskies travel to New Jersey to face off with Monmouth on Sunday, January 26. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
