BOSTON -- Abigail Jegede and Yirsy Quéliz combined to score 30 total points, but the Huskies fell to the Drexel Dragons 53-47 at home Friday. The Huskies (1-16, 0-8) had two players score in double figures, led by Jegede, who had 19 points from 46.7% efficiency. Quéliz added 11 points, and Alyssa Staten added five points and 13 rebounds.
Northeastern grabbed 31 rebounds compared to Drexel's 27, led by Staten's 13 boards. Northeastern's defense also held Drexel to only 18.8%Â shooting from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Northeastern went on a 6-0 run with 8:18 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Staten, to take an 8-2 lead. The Huskies then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 15-9 advantage. Northeastern did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 15 points close to the basket.
Drexel rallied to take a 24-20 lead before Northeastern went on a 5-0 run, starting at the 2:08 mark in the second quarter. Highlighted by a deep three from Camille Clement, the Huskies took a 25-24 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Northeastern forced three Drexel turnovers in the period and turned them into three points.
Northeastern then lost its advantage in the third and trailed the Dragons 42-34 entering the fourth. Northeastern played physical near the basket, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
Northeastern narrowed its deficit to 49-42 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Quéliz's layup, to shrink the deficit to 49-47 with 59 seconds to go in the contest. Drexel responded and outscored the Huskies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 53-47.
Northeastern stays home to host Delaware on Sunday, February 2, for its NGWSD and Alumni game. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
