ELON, N.C. – Northeastern (6-8, 2-3 CAA) came away victorious in high scoring style against Elon (4-12, 2-3 CAA) in five-set fashion.
Northeastern def. Elon: 29-27, 32-30, 26-24, 25-22, 15-5
- Set One: The home team emerged with the early lead in the first set of the prime-time match 6-3. The Huskies battled to a 14-10 lead behind kills from Emma Rowell, Svenja Rodenbüsch, and Beatrice Gennari. The Phoenix brought the game within one, but a late timeout from Northeastern reset the squad to push to a 29-27 win on a Gennari kill.
- Set Two: The second set, the highest of the evening, began even until Northeastern took a 16-12 behind a kill from Beatrice Gennari. Elon battled to bring it back to a tie at 24-24 on a service ace to push the score beyond 25. The teams sent kills back and forth to go past 30 points, but a final pair of kills from Zehra Yilmaz put Northeastern up 2-0.
- Set Three: In a similar fashion to the second set, the teams knotted through 11, before the Phoenix took a 17-12 lead. The Huskies pushed back, bringing the score to 24-22 in match point their way, but a triple threat of kills from Elon brought the match to four sets.
- Set Four: Elon pushed the limits of the match in the fourth set, matching the Huskies offensive aggression. The score remained in an even exchange throughout the majority of the set, highlighted by a Brynn Smith kill to keep the score at 18-a-piece. The home team scored the last four of out five points to secure a 25-22 win and force a fifth set.
- Set Five: The Huskies dominated set five with a 13-3 starting lead. Elon would score one last point on a kill, but Svenja Rodenbüsch would seal the road victory for Northeastern.
- Brynn Smith led the attack for Northeastern with 21 kills, 14 digs, and three service aces.
- Nadia Koanui tallied a team-high 21 digs with just one reception error.
- Sofia King led the passing effort with 38 assists alongside 13 digs.
- As a team, Northeastern tallied 73 kills, 81 digs, 63 assists, and 8 service aces.
Northeastern will return to Elon tomorrow. The match will be on Sunday, October 12, with a 3 p.m. start time on FloCollege.
