BOSTON, Mass. – Northeastern (7-9, 3-4 CAA) fell to reigning conference champion Charleston (12-7, 6-3 CAA) in four sets Saturday afternoon.
Charleston def. Northeastern: 25-11, 25-20, 25-21, 25-15
- Set One: The opening set of the afternoon began neck and neck, as the two teams stayed even through the first eight. The Huskies would then go on a 10-0 run behind two service aces from Brynn Smith and a pair of blocks from Zehra Yilmaz. Charleston would attempt a comeback, but a final kill from Beatrice Gennari finalized the Husky 25-11 first set victory.
- Set Two: The battle ensued into the second set of play, with the teams exchanging points until the media time out, with Charleston holding a 15-13 advantage. After the media timeout, the Cougars went on a 4-0 run before a kill from Valentina Meirelles temporarily stopped the bleeding. Northeastern fell behind by five as the visitors moved to a 25-20 second-set win.
- Set Three: In similar fashion to the previous set, the foes kept it even throughout the media timeout, with Northeastern holding a 15-14 edge. Charleston pushed into the lead (22-19) on back-to-back kills from their middles, forcing a Husky timeout. The Cougars held onto their lead, taking a 2-1 lead in a 25-21 set win.
- Set Four: The final set of day stayed on theme, this time with Charleston taking the 15-11 advantage at the media break. Smart play from Sofia King allowed a break in the Cougar flow, but the visitors kept their foot on the gas. Charleston won the match on a 25-15 set victory.
- Svenja Rodenbüsch led the offensive strike with a double-double of 14 kills and 16 digs, followed closely by Brynn Smith with 13.
- Nadia Koanui tallied a team-high 19 digs to go alongside two service aces.
- Sofia King directed the passing front with 24 assists, seven digs, and a pair of service aces.
- As a unit, Northeastern tallied 47 kills, 61 digs, 42 assists, and seven service aces.
Northeastern will host the Cougars tomorrow at 12 p.m. on NESN and FloCollege. The Huskies will be celebrating Breaking Barriers throughout the match, as well as holding a signing session afterwards.
