BOSTON – Joe Connor scored twice and added an assist, and the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (1-0-0) used a three-goal first period en route to a 6-4 victory over Holy Cross (0-1-0) on Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
Â
Dylan Hryckowian,
Giacomo Martino,
Matthew Perkins and
Jacob Mathieu also scored for the Huskies, while
Lawton Zacher made 25 saves in goal.
Â
Holy Cross struck first less than four minutes into the game when Jack Stockfish gathered a loose puck in the defensive zone before beating Zacher up top for his first of the season.
Â
Northeastern fired right back, though, with Hryckowian recording his first of the year during a delayed penalty. After an
Austen May shot from the point was blocked into the corner, Hryckowian quickly corralled the puck and fired a shot from below the goal line that caught the skate of Hogg and in to level the score at one.
Â
The Huskies went ahead 2-1 with 3:30 left in the opening frame from Martino ripped a shot from the slot past Hoog off a feed from
Joaquim Lemay behind the cage.
Â
NU extended it to 3-1 late in the period on Perkins' first of the year as he picked up a loose puck at the right side of the night and fired it home for the score.
Â
Holy Cross made it a one-goal game two minutes into the second period on David Hymovitch's first of the year when he snapped a shot home from the slot.
Â
Northeastern made it a two-goal game yet again less than a minute later in transition on Connor's first of the season, roofing a shot over Hoog's shoulder off a drop pass from
Tyler Fukakusa.
Â
Holy Cross continued to fight, and made it a one-goal game with 7:41 remaining in regulation when Timothy Heinke poked home a loose puck in front of the net.
Â
Connor put the game out of reach with 2:38 remaining, using his patience to get Hoog to commit low before going top shelf to make it 5-3.
Â
Holy Cross would add a late goal from William Elias before Mathieu potted an empty netter to close out the scoring.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action next Friday when Northeastern hosts Army at 7 p.m. from Matthews Arena.
