Late Push Not Enough, Huskies Fall To Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Yirsy Quéliz scored 11 points and Camryn Collins added nine, but the Northeastern women's basketball team fell to the Providence Friars 50-45 on Tuesday morning at Alumni Hall.

The Huskies were led by Quéliz, who had 11 points and three assists. Collins chipped in with nine points while Morgan Matthews added eight points off the bench. Taylor Holohan contributed four points, four assists and four rebounds.

Both teams struggled offensively throughout the contest, shooting just 33.9% (NU) and 36.5% (PC). The Huskies went 0-for-3 from beyond the arc in the opening quarter and finished 3-for-19 for the game.

The Huskies fell behind early, trailing 12-8 at the end of the first quarter after managing just four field goals in the opening period.

Northeastern continued to struggle in the second quarter, scoring just six points on 2-of-8 shooting. The Huskies faced a 23-14 halftime deficit despite forcing seven Providence turnovers in the first half.

The Friars extended their advantage to 14 points early in the third quarter before Northeastern began to chip away. The Huskies went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Quéliz, to cut the deficit to 35-29 heading into the final period. Northeastern scored nine of its 15 third-quarter points in the paint to stay within striking distance.

The Huskies pulled within five points multiple times in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit to 49-45 with 12 seconds remaining on a three-pointer by Quéliz. However, Northeastern was unable to complete the comeback, as the Friars held on for the five-point victory.

The Huskies' defense forced 18 Providence turnovers, converting them into 10 points, but struggled to capitalize offensively when it mattered most.

Up next, the Huskies will return to Cabot Center to host Sacred Heart on Saturday, November 22 at 1 p.m. streaming on FloCollege. Tickets are available at NUHuskies.com/tickets.
