BOSTON, Mass. -- Camryn Collins poured in a career-high 19 points and the Northeastern women's basketball team converted 30-of-42 free throws to defeat the Sacred Heart Pioneers 68-60 at Cabot Center on Saturday.
The Huskies were led by Collins, who had a near-perfect 11-for-13 performance from the free throw line. Yirsy Quéliz added 15 points, seven of which came from the charity stripe, and chipped in on the boards with five rebounds. She also extended her double-digit scoring streak to six games, tallying double figures in every game so far this season. Alyssa Staten notched the first double-digit rebounding mark of the season for Northeastern, with eight points to go with her 10 rebounds. Taylor Holohan also chipped in with seven points and four assists, and was a team-high +20 on the afternoon.
Northeastern held its late leads at the charity stripe, shooting 71.4 percent from the free throw line on 42 attempts. The Huskies converted 18-of-21 free throws in the fourth quarter alone to seal the victory. Collins' 11 made free throws marked a career high, while her 13 attempts also set a new personal best.
The Huskies jumped out to a strong start, building a 17-10 lead after the first quarter behind efficient shooting and a balanced attack. Northeastern shot 58.3 percent in the opening period and scored eight fast break points.
Sacred Heart battled back in the second quarter, outscoring Northeastern 15-10 to trim the deficit to 27-25 at halftime. The Pioneers shot 50 percent from three-point range in the quarter and pulled within two points heading into the break.
The third quarter saw the lead change hands twice as both teams traded baskets. Northeastern regained control with a 4-0 run midway through the quarter, highlighted by a three-pointer from Morgan Matthews, to take a 44-41 advantage into the final period. Matthews finished with five points and a steal off the bench.
Northeastern took command in the fourth quarter, using its free throw shooting to pull away. Camryn Collins went 9-for-9 from the line to help seal the victory. Northeastern led by as many as eight points in the quarter, preventing SHU from reclaiming the lead in the final frame. Northeastern held the lead for a total of 36 minutes of the contest, with Sacred Heart holding brief leads inn the first and third quarters.
The Northeastern defense forced 15 Sacred Heart turnovers, converting them into 14 points on the offensive end. The Huskies also dominated in the paint, scoring 18 points while holding the Pioneers to just 24.Â
