PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton (3-2) had four players in double figures and used a 16-4 run midway through the first half to take control of the game against the Northeastern men's basketball team (2-3) on Thursday night at Jadwin Gymnasium, 70-57.
Â
The Huskies struggled shooting the ball all night, finishing 22-of-59 from the field and 2-of-19 from three-point range.
Xavier Abreu was a bright spot, however, leading all scorers with 17 points, all coming in the second half, along with three rebounds and three steals. He was joined in double figures by
Youri Fritz (16 points, eight rebounds, four blocks), while
Xander Alarie added nine points and eight rebounds.
Â
Princeton never trailed in the game and was led by 14 points apiece from Dalen Davis (4-of-11 shooting) and Jacob Huggins (2-of-3 from the floor, 10-of-12 FT). Jack Stanton chipped in 13 points, connecting on three three-pointers, while Malik Abdullahi posted 11 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Â
It was the seven-minute run that turned the game, with the Tigers going 5-of-10 overall and 2-of-4 from deep to turn an 8-8 game into a 24-12 Princeton lead with 6:12 until the break.
Â
The Tigers led by 13 at halftime (33-20) and by as many as 16 in the second half before a quick 6-0 Huskies run late in regulation, capped by a triple from Abreu, brought deficit down to seven with 2:42 left. But Princeton would ice it at the stripe, hitting nine of their 12 free throws in the final two minutes to put the game out of reach.
Â
Princeton finished the night shooting 40% from both the field (18-of-45) and from long range (6-of-15).
Â
Northeastern will be back in action on Saturday when the Huskies travel to Akron, Ohio for the Morgan and Morgan Classic, where the Huskies will take on Duquesne at Lebron James Arena at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School at 4 p.m.
