AKRON, Ohio – Freshman
Xavier Abreu went off for 32 points off the bench, and the Northeastern men's basketball team (3-3) got production from up and down the lineup on the way to a 93-86 victory over Duquesne (4-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Morgan & Morgan Classic at LeBron James Arena.
Â
Abreu finished the night 11-of-17 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the line to mark the 12th time in program history that a freshman has scored at least 32 points in a game, and the first since Tyson Walker vs. Elon on Jan. 2, 2020 (32 points). He added five rebounds, three steals, two assists and a crucial block with 17 seconds left that helped the Huskies put the game out of reach.
Â
The Huskies had their best shooting night of the season, going 32-of-58 from the floor (55%) overall including a 59% (17-of-29) mark in the second half while hitting 24-of-30 free throws in the game and 15-of-18 in the second half.
Â
Northeastern led for most of the night, and the entirety of the second half, and buckled down when it needed to with clutch performances on both ends of the floor, highlighted by a corner three from
William Kermoury (13 points on 3-of-6 shooting and two steals) in the final minute that gave the Huskies a two-possession lead it would not relinquish.
Â
The Huskies received 60 points off the bench, including
Haris Elezovic's going for 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting and a team-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Xander Alarie chipped in with five points, six rebounds and five blocks in 35 minutes.
Â
Duquesne received strong efforts from Tarence Guinyard and John Hugley IV, who scored 19 and 18 points respectively. Jimmie Williams added 17 points, while Jakub Necas contributed 14 points on perfect 6-of-6 shooting. The Dukes stayed in the game behind their 54.2% field goal percentage and 50 points in the paint, but the Huskies maintained control of the game despite a 60% shooting performance from Duquesne over the final 20 minutes.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action next Friday when Northeastern travels to Wake Forest for a 12 p.m. tip on ACCNX.
