LOWELL, Mass. -- Taylor Holohan posted a career-high 14 points to lead the Northeastern women's basketball team to a 51-46 victory over UMass Lowell on Tuesday night at the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex.
The Huskies were led by Holohan, who did not miss a single shot all night, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Camryn Collins and Morgan Matthews each added eight points, with Collins chipping in five rebounds and four assists as well.
Northeastern dominated the glass in Tuesday's contest, out-rebounding UMass Lowell 39-28. The Huskies pulled down 12 offensive rebounds and converted those opportunities into 13 second chance points. Northeastern also took advantage of 16 River Hawk turnovers, scoring 11 points off those miscues.
The Northeastern defense held UMass Lowell to just 36.5 percent shooting from the field, including 21.7 percent from three-point range.
Northeastern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-7 at the end of the first quarter. UMass Lowell built its largest lead of nine points early in the opening period before the Huskies began to chip away.
Northeastern battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the River Hawks 12-6 to trim the deficit to 22-19 at halftime. Collins scored six points in the quarter and the Huskies connected on a pair of fast break layups to fuel the comeback.
The Huskies took control in the third quarter, going on a 12-0 run to seize a 38-28 advantage entering the final period. Northeastern shot 40.0 percent from the field in the quarter and made seven of eight free throws, while holding UMass Lowell to just 18.2 percent shooting.
Northeastern maintained its lead throughout the fourth quarter, never allowing the River Hawks to pull closer than three points. The Huskies knocked down two of two free throws in the final frame, both by Holohan, to preserve the victory amid the UMass Lowell scoring run.
Paris Gilmore led UMass Lowell with 14 points, while Jaini Edmonds added nine points and three assists. The River Hawks struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on just five of 23 three-point attempts.
