PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Alyssa Staten recorded 10 points and six rebounds, and Yirsy Quéliz tallied 11, but the Northeastern women's basketball team fell to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 79-56 on Friday night at Jersey Mike's Arena.
The Huskies had two players score in double figures, led by Staten's 10 points and Quéliz's 11 points and four assists, while Camryn Collins chipped in with nine points.
The Huskies pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points, but were out-rebounded by Rutgers 28-43 in Friday's game. The Northeastern defense forced 15 Rutgers turnovers, which turned into six points on the offensive end of the floor. However, the Scarlet Knights dominated in the paint, outscoring the Huskies 36-30.
Northeastern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-10 at the end of the first quarter. Rutgers built its lead behind strong play from Nene Ndiaye, who had nine first-quarter points, and Imani Lester, who added eight.
The Huskies continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 41-25 halftime deficit. Rutgers shot 50.0 percent from the field in the quarter and knocked down three three-pointers to extend its advantage.
Northeastern fought back in the third quarter, outscoring Rutgers 16-24 to trim the deficit to 65-41 heading into the fourth. The Huskies shot 53.8 percent from the field in the quarter, including 50.0 percent from three-point range. Quéliz scored eight points in the third quarter, including a pair of three-pointers.
Northeastern could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 79-56. The Huskies took advantage of their opportunities in the paint, scoring eight of their 15 points there. Northeastern its second-best shooting percentage of the season, 41.8% in the loss.
