BOSTON, Mass. -- Despite double-digit performances from Camryn Collins and Yirsy Quéliz, the Northeastern women's basketball team fell to the LIU Sharks, 75-60, in the season and home opener Monday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
The Huskies had two players score in double figures, led by Collins, who had 15 points and three rebounds. Quéliz chipped in with 11 points, four rebounds and five assists.
Northeastern out-rebounded LIU 45-32 in Monday's contest, paced by Taylor Holohan's nine boards. The Huskies also pulled down 18 offensive rebounds and scored 19 second chance points.
The Northeastern defense forced 15 turnovers, converting those takeaways into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor.
LIU took an early lead in the first quarter, building an eventual 39-26 halftime advantage. The Sharks shot 56.0 percent from the field in the opening half, paced by Kadidia Toure's 15 points.
Northeastern mounted a push in the third quarter, narrowing its deficit to 46-34 before LIU responded and stretched its lead to 61-46 heading into the fourth. The Huskies knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to account for six of its 20 points.
Northeastern could not pull any closer in the final period, losing by a final of 75-60. LIU took advantage of its opportunities at the free throw line, knocking down 23 of 33 attempts to account for nearly a third of its scoring.
Up next, the Huskies will travel to Connecticut to take on the Yale Bulldogs on Friday, November 7 at 6 p.m.
