BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After dropping the first two sets, the Northeastern volleyball team (9-14, 5-9) fought back to extend the match in a thrilling third set, but could not complete the comeback as Campbell (20-5, 12-2) earned a weekend sweep of the Huskies on Saturday afternoon at Gilbert Craig Gore Arena.
Campbell defeats Northeastern: 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18
Beatrice Gennari led with 13.5 points on 11 kills (.526), while
Emma Rowell added 11.5 points on 11 kills.
Valentina Meirelles contributed 10.5 points with nine kills. Svenja Rodenbuesch recorded a match-high 28 digs, and
Nadia Koanui dished out 44 assists.
SET ONE: The Camels dominated from the opening serve, jumping out to a commanding 10-3 lead as Aley Clent and Gwen Wolkow powered the early attack. Northeastern fought to stay within striking distance, with
Brynn Smith providing offensive spark. The Huskies closed to 22-16 following a four-point run, but Campbell responded with three straight points to close out the frame 25-19.
SET TWO: Campbell once again seized early control, racing to a 7-1 advantage behind strong serving from Ella Duong, who recorded a service ace. The Camels maintained their lead throughout the set, extending it to 20-12 as Maja Daca and Abbie Tuyo combined for six kills. Northeastern refused to go quietly, mounting a late comeback behind Gennari's five kills in the set. The Huskies rallied to cut the deficit to 24-21 on a service ace from Rodenbuesch, forcing a Campbell timeout before the Camels closed out the set from there.
SET THREE: The third set proved to be the most competitive of the match, featuring eight tie scores and three lead changes as neither team could pull away. The set was tied at 3-3, 11-11, 13-13, 18-18, and 20-20, showcasing the back-and-forth nature of the frame. Northeastern found offensive success with 18 kills in the set, led by Gennari's three and
Sydney Mayfield's three off the bench. Rowell became a key factor down the stretch with four kills, including crucial points late. Campbell struggled to maintain its earlier efficiency, hitting just .083 for the set with eight errors. With the score tied 23-23, Northeastern closed on a 2-0 run as Rowell delivered the set-clinching kill.
SET FOUR: The Camels came out determined to close the match, jumping ahead 5-4 on a service ace from Campbell's Sadie Johnston. Campbell then rattled off five consecutive points to build a 10-6 advantage, forcing a Northeastern timeout. Northeastern attempted to rally behind
Jane Nelson, who came off the bench to provide two kills, cutting the deficit to 18-12. Campbell weathered the brief storm and finished strong, scoring seven of the final 11 points.
Northeastern will close out the regular season next weekend when the Huskies host Hofstra at the Cabot Center, beginning on Friday at 1 p.m.
