No. 12 Northeastern Opens Second Half At Army

BOSTON, Mass. — The No. 12 Northeastern men's hockey team and Army West Point meet for the second time this season on Friday, Jan. 2 at Tate Rink (7 p.m.), marking the 26th all-time meeting between the two programs. 

THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
  1. DOMINATING THE LEAGUEFreshman Jacob Mathieu is having a standout rookie campaign in Hockey East play, ranking among the league's top-10 in seven different statistical categories through nine conference games. Mathieu's 11 points are tied for fifth in Hockey East (tied for second among all rookies), while he sits tied for fifth with seven assists, tied for ninth in goals (4), and tied for first with 1.22 points per game. The rookie also ranks tied for second in power-play goals (3), tied for tenth in blocks (16), and seventh in faceoff percentage (55.2%).
  2. FIRST HALF FLASHBACK: Northeastern enters the second half of the season with its best record (10-6-0) at the break since 2021-22, when the Huskies finished 13-4-1. The team is outscoring opponents 48-38 and has posted five wins over ranked opponents, including then-#7 Denver, #11 UMass, a sweep of #11/10 Boston College, and #18/19 Boston University. NU also reeled off a six-game win streak from Oct. 17 through Nov. 8.
  3. NATION'S BESTSophomore Joe Connor has delivered in clutch situations with three game-winning goals this season, tied for sixth in the nation. Connor's game-winners have come against Holy Cross, #18/19 Boston University, and Brown. Freshman Giacomo Martino has been a power-play threat with four PPGs, tying him for 20th nationally, while senior Vinny Borgesi leads all NCAA skaters in time on ice at 27:35 per game. Between the pipes, goaltender Lawton Zacher ranks tied for first in shutouts (3), fourth in save percentage (.936), and tenth in goals against average (1.92).
