CHARLOTTE – In an opening day doubleheader, the Northeastern Huskies (1-1) split with the Charlotte 49ers (1-1), falling 6-1 in the opening game of the season, but bouncing back to defeat Charlotte 3-1 in game two.
GAME 1 – Northeastern 1, Charlotte 6
- The Huskies struck first in the second inning with a two-out rally from Harrison Feinberg and Gregory Bozzo. After the first two batters of the inning went down quickly, Feinberg's two-out double gave the Huskies life, and Bozzo hit an opposite field single against the shift to score Feinberg for the 1-0 lead.
- Charlotte responded in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI ground-out after a leadoff triple, tying the game at 1-1.
- In the third, the 49ers took the lead on a two-run double to right center.
- Northeastern held the 9'ers to just the three runs for a majority of the game, with reliever Jordan Gottesman getting his first Division I look, as he worked 4.1 innings allowing just two hits, one run and one walk, striking out five on 61 total pitches.
- Despite the bullpen efforts the Huskies were unable to erase the two-run deficit, and Charlotte pulled away with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.
- Leadoff man Carmelo Musacchia went 2-for-4 in the opening game of the season, but the Huskies were held to just six total hits to open the season.
GAME 2 – Northeastern 3, Charlotte 1
- Northeastern jumped on the 49ers early, with another leadoff infield single from Musacchia. With one out, Jack Goodman belted NU's first homer of the year over the left field wall for the 2-0 lead.
- The Huskies held the 2-0 lead thanks to starter Will Jones, who despite allowing five hits and a walk, let no runners cross home plate while striking out eight batters in his outing. He threw 84 pitches in his third career start, 54 of them strikes.
- In the fifth it was Ryan Gerety notching a one-out double, followed by Cam Maldonado hitting a two-out single against the shift, that gave NU its third run of game two.
- Gerety finished game two with two doubles and a run scored in his first start of the season.
- Charlotte got one back in the bottom of the eighth on a fielders' choice with the bases loaded, but the NU defense squashed the rally.
- First out of the bullpen was Ryan McCarroll, making his Division I debut working 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and an earned run. He was relieved by Cooper McGrath, who worked a full inning with one hit, no runs, and a big bases-loaded strikeout to halt the rising Charlotte momentum.
- With a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, the Huskies called upon closer Jack Beauchesne to shut the door – two quick fly outs and a grounder back to the mound got Beauchesne his first save of the season on 14 pitches.
- Jones was credited with the first pitching win of the season for NU, the fifth win of his career.
- Last season, Northeastern bounced back in three of four double headers in which the Huskies lost game one, to win game two.
The Huskies and 49ers are scheduled to wrap up the series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
