FORT MYERS, Fla. – In their annual early-season scrimmage, the Northeastern University Huskies fell to the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5-2 on Friday afternoon at JetBlue Park.
The Huskies struck first in the top of the second with the bases loaded.
Jack Goodman led off with a single,
Matt Brinker walked, and
Justin Bosland was hit by a pitch, bringing up left fielder
Harrison Feinberg. Feinberg blooped one under the glove of the Sox third baseman and brought in Goodman and Brinker for the 2-0 lead.
The first three Husky pitchers held the Sox in check, allowing just one hit, one walk, and striking out two. Starter
Max Gitlin (1H, 1K),
James Morice, and
Andrew Rogovic (K) each threw one inning apiece, with Morice and Rogovic holding the 2-0 lead.
In the fourth the Sox loaded the bases and scored on an two-RBI single, a sac fly, an overthrow on a steal to take the lead 4-2. The Sox would tack on a fifth run in the bottom of the sixth on a line drive to right field to give the game its 5-2 final score.
Out of the back of the bullpen, freshman
Brett Mulligan posted Northeastern's scoreless fifth inning, retiring the Sox with a 1-2-3 inning starting off with a strikeout.
Nick Coniglio closed out the contest allowing a run on one hit and one walk, but striking out his first batter faced.
The Huskies will get back to playing NCAA contests on Saturday, February 22 with a double header against Indiana State starting at 1p.m. at Centennial Field in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Indiana State series will be streamed on FloCollege.
