Huskies Face Friars In Hockey East Quarterfinals

BOSTON— The fifth-seeded Northeastern women's hockey team will travel to face the fourth-seeded Providence College Friars in the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in Schneider Arena. The game will be broadcast on NESN, ESPN+ and Hockey East's international stream.
 
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
  1. KNOW YOUR HISTORY: The Huskies own the fifth seed in the Hockey East Tournament. It is the first time since 2011 Northeastern has played a road Hockey East Quarterfinal game. NU made a run to the Championship game in 2011 as the No. 5 seed, falling to BC, 3-1. NU is 2-1 all-time as the No. 5 seed. In the quarterfinal round, NU is 1-0 as the fifth seed and 19-3 all-time. Against Providence in the Hockey East Tournament, the Huskies are 5-1 all-time and 2-0 in the quarterfinals. The two teams last met in the quarterfinals in 2016, with NU winning the best of three series, 5-2 and 6-2.
  2. HEY ROOKIES: Freshmen Éloïse Caron, Tuva Kandell and Lisa Jönsson were all named to the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie team. Three honorees on the All-Rookie team is a program record for the Huskies. Caron is second among all Hockey East rookies, with 24 points. She has posted three game-winning goals this season and her plus-14 rating is the fourth-best mark among all Hockey East players. Kandell has posted 18 points, the most by a rookie Husky defenseman since Heather Mottau tallied 19 in 2013-14. Her 18 points are second-most among all rookie defensemen nationally. A National Goalie of the Year semifinalist, Jönsson posted a 1.57 GAA, .938 save percentage and seven shutouts for NU. Her 1.57 GAA is the eight-best mark nationally, her .938 save percentage is 11th in the NCAA and her seven shutouts are tied for the third-best mark in the country. 
  3. THE FRIARS: The Friars swept the Huskies in the regular season for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Kandell and senior Taze Thompson lead all Huskies with a goal and an assist against the Friars this season. Hockey East's Scoring Champion, Reichen Kirchmair leads all PC players with four points against the Huskies off two goals and two assists.Northeastern will be looking for its first win Schneider Arena since a 4-1 victory on Oct. 28, 2022. PC owns a 14-3-2 record at home this year. The Huskies and Friars last met in the Hockey East Tournament in the Championship game on March 4, 2023, a 4-1 win for NU. The victory marked Northeastern's sixth-straight Hockey East title. Taze Thompson scored a power-play goal in the third period for the Huskies, while PC's Hope Walinski started in net. Reichen Kirchmair leads all Hockey East players with 37 points, while Audrey Knapp is tied for second with 35 points. Hope Walinski has played the bulk of the minutes in goal for PC, she owns a 1.83 GAA and .923 save percentage.
The winner will advance to the Hockey East Semifinals on Wednesday, March 5 at a time and location to be determined by results around the tournament.
