WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Abigail Jegede and Alyssa Staten combined to score 35 total points for the Northeastern women's basketball team, but William & Mary (11-15, 8-7) put four players in double figures en route to a 71-51 victory over the Huskies on Friday night at Kaplan Arena.
The Huskies (2-22, 1-14) had three players score in double figures, led by Jegede, who had 21 points and four assists. Staten added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Natalie Larranaga helped out with 10 points and two steals.
The Northeastern defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Friday's game, forcing 20 William & Mary turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Larranaga's two steals led the way individually for the Huskies.
How It Happened
Northeastern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 25-13 at the end of the first quarter.
William & Mary kept adding to that lead, building a 35-18 advantage before Northeastern went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Staten, to narrow its deficit to 35-26. William & Mary responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Huskies trailing 40-26 heading into halftime.
Northeastern's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Huskies faced a 55-34 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Northeastern played well near the basket, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
William & Mary kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 69-43 advantage before Northeastern went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Yirsy Queliz's layup, to shrink the deficit to 69-49 with 2:37 to go in the contest. The Huskies were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 71-51. Northeastern took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
