BOSTON, Mass. – The Northeastern men's basketball team (13-12, 5-7 CAA) couldn't close the gap as they fell to Hampton (12-13, 4-8), 84-75, on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
Â
Rashad King (12-of-13 overall, six rebounds) led Northeastern with a career high 32 points while the Huskies' squad finished 22-of-27 overall and 5-of-15 from deep.
Harold Woods contributed 19 points, while adding four rebounds and two assists. It's King's second career high in as many games, as he just tallied a new personal best 28 at Hofstra on Thursday.
Â
Noah Farrakhan was the playmaker for Hampton, recording 28 points on 8-of-9 from the field to lead four Pirates in double figures. Hampton was 19-of-24 overall and turned eight offensive boards into 13 points.
Â
The Pirates ran away with an early lead, starting the game on a 9-2 run, and by the first media timeout would hold a 15-6 advantage.
Â
In the first half, the Huskies shot 54% (13-24-of-21), led by 14 points from King on 6-of-8 overall, to cut the Hampton lead down five points at the half. Farrakhan led the Pirates with 11 points through the opening 20 minutes as the Hampton squad went 18-of-29 overall and hauled in 13 boards in the first half.
Â
Northeastern all but kept pace with Hampton in the second half, shooting 29% from deep and 89% from the free-throw line. King and Woods combined for 30 of the team's 40 points in the final 20 minutes, going 8-13 overall. Northeastern went on a 10-5 run late in the half, capped off by a
Collin Metcalf dunk to cut the deficit to seven, but the Pirates to maintain that advantage with clutch free-throw shooting to maintain a nine-point lead at the final buzzer.
In the short history of the two programs' all-time history, it was Hampton's first win over the Huskies, as NU leads the all-time series now 3-1.
Â
The Huskies are back home this Thursday and Saturday as they first host Campbell (Feb. 13 | 7 p.m.), followed by Stony Brook (Feb. 15 | 3:30 p.m.)
